I enjoyed seeing that prep series. Thanks.

Wow! That is really awesome. Thanks for sharing. I have been hesitant to tackle this part of our obsession. I know what's on my Christmas list. Would love to know more about what tools you use and lessons learned. Thanks!

I used an ARO type air pen from all air products. It cost me $150 (£90) for the tool, an extra stylus and shipping to the uk.

I then also used a air powered mini grinder to grind the matrix.

Adam,

Have you considered grinding down an edge to make it stand alone as a display - upright?

Just a thought - would be interested in reasons for or against.

Hi Tim

I was considering it, although due to the orientation of the ammonite, I think it would look wrong standing on either end of the rock. The only was I think it would look good is with the mouth of the living chamber pointing down, but there isn't much rock there to put a flat on it so I may just put it onto a stand?

What were you thinking?

Hi Adam,

Well, my first thought was something like this:

post-2806-0-55998100-1406658452_thumb.jp

Living chamber up in life position.

But then again, I guess,... I would just leave it as is - I kind of like the natural look.

I tend to trim my pieces when possible to save on storage space, but, It looks kind of neat as is.

If I had many of these type of fossils, I suppose I would, at some point, try to get creative about cutting/grinding the matrix into more artistic shapes for space saving and artistic license.. and aesthetic beauty.

Just some thoughts.

Lovely fossil as it is. :)

I think the smooth, rounded shape of the nodule adds to the aesthetic value of the piece. Cutting it to stand might destroy that. Great work, was this found on the trip by which I joined?

Yeah it was found on that trip. Managed to find it on the beach before we went over the boulders.
