NinjaShark
I found this mammal looking tooth in the Peace River near Arcadia, FL. Just not sure what it is exactly. What i can tell is that it was probably from a mammal... to me, it does resemble a plant eating animals tooth... It didn't look like a Tapir tooth to me... (it certainly wasn't a horse tooth, i found plenty of those) heck maybe it is just a fossil cow tooth or something hehe. But yeah, just thought I'd share it here, see what y'all think. It does seem to have an enamel top part followed by some roots that have been damaged/broken off over the years of fossilization. Hope these pics are ok.Thanks for the help! calhounensis
Looks sirenian to me, a good picture of the chewing surface would help ID it. For now I would tentatively call it Metaxytherium floridanum.
fossilized6s
Wow, strange tooth. It looks simular to a Giant ground Sloth or Giant Armadillo, but the roots in either creature are not like that.... ~Charlie~ "There are those that look at things the way they are, and ask why.....i dream of things that never were, and ask why not?" ~RFK ->Get your Mosasaur print ->How to spot a fake Trilobite ->How to identify a CONCRETION from a DINOSAUR EGG

Shellseeker
I am having an odd problem with these specific photos.. When I double click on a photo ONCE, I get a constantly flickering image-blank-image-blank, When I double click on the flickering image, I get a "steady" image heavily magnified (and slightly blurred), I can download the middle sized image and it is fine-normal no flickering -- in a Windows picture viewer. Any Thoughts? As for the ID, impossible to tell without a photo of the chewing surface, but I think dudong or peccary are possibles. fossilized6s
What ever it is it's an animal that was very old. Harry provided a nice picture reference in this thread of an old Horse that looks similar. But im leaning more towards Dugong. http://www.thefossilforum.com/index.php?/topic/14420-mammal-tooth-from-miocene-era/ ~Charlie~ "There are those that look at things the way they are, and ask why.....i dream of things that never were, and ask why not?" ~RFK ->Get your Mosasaur print ->How to spot a fake Trilobite ->How to identify a CONCRETION from a DINOSAUR EGG
NinjaShark
Thanks guys, I appreciate the help so far. Here are some more pictures. I don't think it is giant sloth, i looked at some pics of giant sloth teeth and it doesn't look the same.Unfortunately my actual camera is out of commission at the moment so iPhone pics are all I've got. Sorry they are so dark, i will try to get a better pic when my other camera starts working again. It was tough to get a good picture of the chewing surface, it is also pretty worn down. It seems to be a molar of some sort. I looked at some of the dugong teeth pictures as reference and it is possible it could be that. Not sure, but that looked pretty close so far. Thanks again! jpevahouse
Looks like a well worn rear molar from the lower jaw of a peccary.. Edited August 6, 2014 by jpevahouse
Harry Pristis
I think Calhounensis made a good guess . . . a dugong. http://pristis.wix.com/the-demijohn-page What seest thou else In the dark backward and abysm of time? ---Shakespeare, The Tempest
