Looking Lower Peace River

Hello All

Im new to the forum and have a couple of questions. I hope im posting in the right place! I live in Lakeland and have been hunting artifacts in florida for several years But with the new laws Im trying to break into a new form of hunting for fossils. From what Ive read the best place to get my feet wet is the Peace river. Since I have a couple of boats, and scuba gear Im gessing the better areas would be in deeper spots in the lower river? I would like to find someone who knows the area and wouldent mind making a few bucks to help a newbie get started? Thanks for any advise, instruction, warnings, and offers!!

Welcome!

Good luck with your hunts. There are a lot of Peace hunters here that can help.

...i also wouldn't post your number publicly. I would use the PM option to send it.

Welcome to the forum, Bruce.

Have you dived for fossils before? If not I'd consider starting out diving offshore from the greater Venice area. Visibility can be pretty variable (especially on the more shallow shore dives). Look for times when the winds have been calm so things aren't so stirred up. Call your local dive shop and inquire about the viz. There are several areas with nice outcrops of black phosphate gravel/rock offshore (i.e. the "bone beds") where fossils can be found on scuba. The Peace River is currently too high to hunt by standing in the river with a shovel and sifting screen. There are a few brave souls who have found (closely guarded) pockets along the Peace and other rivers where they can dive for fossils during the rainy season. Keep in mind that visibility will likely be nil in fast-moving tannic water and the currents will pose additional challenges. Additionally, in any freshwater system in Florida you stand the chance of sharing your space with the large lizard known as the Alligator. :o

With all those caveats in mind, if you feel confident enough in your diving skills and are bold enough to get into the Peace River during the summer you might consult this website:

Though the information is old you may still find some hints there that will help your quest to dive for fossils. In particular check out the entry for SHELL CREEK which is on the lower Peace River as it widens into the Charlotte Harbor. Be careful and be safe and if you do make it out and find some interesting stuff be sure to take some nice photos and post them on the forum.

Cheers.
