Hey y'all. I am new here. I just wanted to share with you my find and maybe get your thoughts and opinions. I found this about 8 years ago. I have yet to run across anything like it. I believe it's a great, rare find. I do know that it's a great conversation piece! post-16317-0-98075600-1409186159_thumb.jpgpost-16317-0-98075600-1409186159_thumb.jpg

It's a solitary coral. Where did you find it?

Very nice! I don't usually get very excited about coral, but I'd be happy to find one like that! Welcome to the forum.

Are you sure it's a fossil? Looks almost too "new" to be a fossil. In Louisiana, I frequently saw coral debris being used as road building material.

This is a recent one (from wikipedia):

This looks like Fungia commonly called a mushroom coral. I believe Fungia are only found in the Pacific and Indian Oceans. These are frequently sold at pet shops (for aquarium decoration) and shell shops. Your specimen might have been thrown out by someone.

It's not a fossil, but if you bleach it you'll have an excellent specimen of coral! Shell shops and pet shops sell these, and they aren't cheap. Nice find! (BTW when I'm out fossil collecting I often find things like turtle shells, bison teeth, arrowheads, mineral specimens, etc and I have a shelf in my home office dedicated to these!) :1-SlapHands_zpsbb015b76:
