I found this about 8 years ago. I have yet to run across anything like it. I believe it's a great, rare find. I do know that it's a great conversation piece! In Louisiana, I frequently saw coral debris being used as road building material. Al Dente Posted August 28, 2014 Share Posted August 28, 2014 This looks like Fungia commonly called a mushroom coral. I believe Fungia are only found in the Pacific and Indian Oceans. These are frequently sold at pet shops (for aquarium decoration) and shell shops. Your specimen might have been thrown out by someone. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
RoadcutHannah Posted August 28, 2014 Share Posted August 28, 2014 It's not a fossil, but if you bleach it you'll have an excellent specimen of coral! Shell shops and pet shops sell these, and they aren't cheap. Nice find! (BTW when I'm out fossil collecting I often find things like turtle shells, bison teeth, arrowheads, mineral specimens, etc and I have a shelf in my home office dedicated to these!)
