sixgill pete
This post is actually for twofold purpose. First, I found my first ever NC Oligocene Nurse Shark tooth, and I received my new digital microscope in the mail. So these are my first pictures with it. The tooth came from the MM Belgrade quarry. It is in amazing shape. I will post a full trrip report soon, I need to get all of the teeth cleaned and pictures taken. Here we go. sixgill pete
Thanks Charlie and John. John the tooth is 3.52 mm wide. I measured it with the software that came with the microscope, but I need to figure out how to put it on the picture. And yes it is perfect. MarcoSr
Don Really nice specimen! I'm not sure what they ate, but typically you find Nurse Shark teeth with main cusp or other cusp damage. It's really nice to find an undamaged specimen. Marco Sr. "Any day that you can fossil hunt is a great day." MarcoSr
I believe they're mainly crustacean eaters. And they mostly use their teeth to crush. Most of the tooth design would work well for crushing with the exception of the cusp/cusplets which may explain why they are typically damaged. caldigger
I have always noticed Nurse Sharks scurrying along the ocean floor and basically thought they were bottom feeders...I guess mollusks are usually found along the bottom, that would make sense. Beauty of a tooth Don!

jcbshark
Great find Don, I found one in the matrix I collect down here too. Yours is in great shape and the modern ones are predominately crustacean eaters. They are supposed to be one of the better sharks to eat because of thier diet but I haven't tried one personally. Every once in a great while it's not just a big rock down there!
sixgill pete
I have several other nurse shark teeth, all Eocene from NC and Belgium. All of them have some type of damage. This tooth amazed me when I found it, no damage and a full root. Marco. I am pretty sure as Jeff said that the extant species are crustacean eaters. I would guess that was the main diet of the fossil species. Thanks for the comments all. It is a beautiful tooth. sixgill pete
Played with the microscope some more this morning and have another picture at higher magnification. This one does indeed show some wear/damage to some of the cusps. This toy is amazing.
