Mazonia Wildlife Park Question.

I was fossil hunting around pit 11 on the north side of 5000, where they 'turn the soil' ha..but anyway.. My wife and I were walking back to the car and I saw what was a BIG cat...and I mean BIG. He or she must of heard us coming as I typically walk unknown areas with a loud voice (hunters, wildlife). The tail was long and fluffy, equal to the length of the cats head and torso. I didn't see the face, but the size alone negates a Bob cat and the big obvious difference between tails. So my question is well I have two...

Q1. Cougar?!

Q2. Is that place a chiggers mecca? Rofl

...I'm back.

Surprisingly everytime I've been there it's been devoid of wildlife. I've only seen one whitetail. You could have seen a Cougar. Kind of cool and scary at the same time. Id much rather fight a bear then a big cat. Haha

And yes, Mazonia is crawling with Chiggers. But i find the spiders the worst.

How thoughtless of you not to have had your camera at the ready. Could have been a mutated Yeti for all we know. Pictures people, Pictures!!!

I would be surprised if there was any felines roaming around braidwood. I suppose its not entirely impossible. My guess is you saw a coyote. I've seen quite a few out there.

With your description of the animal it is probable you saw a cougar.

The map doesn't indicate the one I spotted in New York state though it is close.

Making noise is a good idea. My singing stinks and I hope they agree. :P

It's hard to remember why you drained the swamp when your surrounded by alligators.

Well Squali, maybe your singing would be the best deterrent. If it is as bad as you feel, it might do better than an air horn. HOOOOOONK!!!

  • 4 months later...

There are cougars there. My father and I saw two the last time we were there (late summer-early fall). But nobody believed us. :( Two large tan creatures stalking across the dirt road, tails hanging in upside down question marks (kind of reminded me of my cats :D). Gosh, I wish we had had a camera! Ugh! We weren't expecting to see anything interesting, that's why we didn't have one. We didn't get a good look, but they were without a doubt cougars. I also found an article about more cougars coming to Illinois.

Next time I go, I'll definitely bring a camera. ;)

Funny, they keep telling us there are no cougars in Connecticut, but many people I know have seen them.

And these are people who know wildlife.

Not to mention, one that was struck by a car/killed on I-95 in south western CT a few years ago.

But they aren't here. <_<
