Muncie Creek Shale Concretion

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I found what appears to be a dermal dentical in a Muncie Creek concretion.

At first I thought maybe Petrodus, but the structure seems much smoother with a flatter base and a more abrupt rise in the center.

Field of view = ~1cm:

Attempt at a slightly oblique view:

I've also found what I believe is the same thing in the same concretion, but viewed from the bottom as it is deeply concave:

Any ideas?

Thanks for looking.

I can't help you for the identification, but this fossil detains all the characteristics of a dermic denticule of selachian ! ;)

Congrats on the tiny find, good eye!

Thank you Coco, Tim, and Charlie.

I've got a lot of studying to do this winter between this and a few other things I've found that I need to figure out.

Charlie...Not so much of a good eye (any more these days) as I tend to stick about everything under the microscope to see what I normally can't  .

Very cool.

The fossil debris around it is intriguing. Some closer scrutiny may be worthwhile.

Context is critical.

Some of the others have some interesting debris and texture, also. I'm going to have to set up a better lighting system to have a look with higher magnification at some of the bits. The overall (but poorly preserved) shapes look like they were something.
