SoreBack
Hello Folks, We found this Saturday in a NJ Cretaceous stream and I thought it was wood when I picked it up but now I'm not so sure. It has a shape that, to my eyes, that is suggestive of a claw core. What do more experienced eyes see? Thanks in Advance, Steve
non-remanié
I'm pretty sure its a piece of Enchodus jaw. On some larger, more complete pieces, you get that same bony texture with the lines ---Wie Wasser schleift den Stein, wir steigen und fallen---
SoreBack
We've only found much smaller pieces of Enchodus jaw sections before so this is a nice addition to the collection. Thanks!
non-remanié
There's a good claw core that an Alabama collector just recently posted. The bone texture does look eerily similar now that I am looking at it again, but you can tell the articulation is intact on their specimen. http://www.thefossilforum.com/index.php?/topic/49517-another-cretaceous-mystery/ ---Wie Wasser schleift den Stein, wir steigen und fallen---

njfossilhunter
It does look like something from a large boney fish ...maybe Enchodus....They did get very big. Carl
I feel quite sure it's the dorsal part of an Enchodus palatine.
