Trackways And Dinosaur Speed

I want to run an activity for kids involving the formulae for calculating a creatures speed based upon their stride and leg length.

I would like to do this with Struthiomimus (because I have access to a cast).

I cannot, however, find a paper or information regarding Strothiomimus trackways.

Is any one aware of one?

I’m not sure exactly what you want, but there is some general information about locomotion (including Struthiomimus) in these papers:

http://icb.oxfordjournals.org/content/40/4/640.full.pdf+html

http://rsif.royalsocietypublishing.org/content/early/2011/11/21/rsif.2011.0687.full.pdf

http://www.palass-pubs.org/palaeontology/pdf/Vol28/Pages%20643-677.pdf

… and perhaps some more useful information about trackway formation (again including Struthiomimus) here:

http://rsif.royalsocietypublishing.org/content/8/61/1142.full

Also there is the famous “Zerbst Trackway” which includes Struthiomimus, for which the Black Hills Institute of Geological Research sells replicas (at an eye-watering price) and large display posters (for $70). If you go to their site:

http://www.bhigr.com/

… you’ll find it by navigating to: Online Catalog > Dinosaurs & Birds > Theropods > Tracks & Trackways > Zerbst Trackway – Cast Replica

About a third of the way down the page there’s a downloadable pdf.

… and then at the bottom of the cast replica page (under “Related Products”) > Zerbst Trackway - Media Display.

The direct links to those three things are given below, but for some reason the site doesn’t seem to allow direct hot-linking, so these links may not work (and you will need to use the navigation route above):

Attached are a couple of charts with the predicted walking and running speeds for Struthiomimus.

The charts are from:

Chapter 10: Speeds of Dinosaurs, pp. 287-308

in: Thulborn, R.A. (1990)

Dinosaur Tracks

Chapman and Hall, 410 pp.

The text has a lot of information with regard to how the formulas are calculated and there is also a separate chapter on the gaits of dinosaurs.

Please send me a PM with email address and I'll be happy to send those for you.
