Prototaxites?

I collected this thinking it was most likely a geologic oddity, but it has occurred to me that in may not be unreasonable to question if it could be from a Prototaxites. It was found in glacial drift which is typically of the right age, and they have reportedly been found north of the spot.

It's pattern pretty intricate, but I can't make out any tubular structures...

If it's not metamorphic (schist, et al), could it be an algal mat?

There was a layer of it at least 3 or 4 cm think sort of laminated on to a big chunk of tan colored sand stone with quite a few cubes of pyrite in it. I don't think it looked as heavily metamorphosed as I would think of for schist. It's from here in Maine so all but a few northern formations have undergone tectonic events, and are somewhat metamorphosed.

It doesn't immediately strike me as Prototaxites, but that doesn't mean it isn't as specimens can vary quite considerably depending on lithology. With specimens like this the only way to definitively tell is with a thin section. I'd definitely suggest you hang on to it though in case you can get a section cut and it is Prototaxites. It's not an algal mat - there are no laminations and the layering is too regular.
