Jurassic Sidestep

I must admit that I like Triassic ammonoids more but Jurassic ammonites are very interesting too.

So two friends and I went on a Jurassic field trip last Saturday.

One friend is a specialist of lower Jurassic (Hettangian) Alpine ammonites. We visited two old locations which were unknown to both friends.

Weather was very fine. It was one of these golden mountain days in autumn, with warm sun, the smell of fresh fallen leaves and virgin snow on the higher tops.post-2660-0-36545900-1412009041_thumb.jpg

While hiking from one location to the other I was lucky and found a Jurassic/Toarcian Lytoceras sp. The upper side was pretty dissolved due to strong condensation of the limestonepost-2660-0-36630200-1412009068_thumb.jpg

I will prep it from the downside which is normally better preserved.post-2660-0-77061200-1412009050_thumb.jpg

The rest of the day we spent at a Hettangian location where we found smaller ammonites which were covered with a black ferro-manganese crust.post-2660-0-65803100-1412009059_thumb.jpg

Andreas,

It is fun to collect other time periods, on occasion, just as a change of pace.

You did well, regardless!

I can almost smell the fresh mountain air in your first site pic. :)

Thank you for the wonderful pictures and report.

Totally agree ... the best period of the year for me . Plus you can combine with mushroom collecting , along with chestnut etc....

Nice finds,by the way !

Hi Andreas,

I'm guessing you were underway with Kurt. Right? I'd love to get into his terrain with him someday. He was here for a visit recently but we unfortunately didn't have the time to visit my sites together. Who was the third in the party? Happy to see that you made some nice finds!

Greetings from the Lake of Constance. Roger

Hi,

thank you all for your nice comments!

Taj, a fine sauce of collected "Eierschwammerl" ( = Austrian word for Cantharellus cibarius mushroom) was cooked for diner next day .

Yes Roger you are right. I was in field with Kurt and Peter. Kurt told me of his visit in Germany.

I hope I can show you some prepped results of my finds soon.

Ahhhh

That's real life Andreas!

I had the opportunity to go back home ( alsace or elsass as you prefer) on the second WE of september and could also combine some triassic visit ( Muschelkalk) with mushroom collecting( not the same day though) . Collected some of the largest C.C that I've seen these past 20 years , and some good meals over the week end!
