Hello everyone. I am fairly new to the forum and I found this beauty yesterday morning near Chesapeake Beach, MD, south of Annapolis. It was a gorgeous sunny day and I made a last minute decision to go walk the beaches. I found this towards the end of my walk. I was rather excited when I found it as I could tell right away it wasn't stone but some type of fossilized bone. It appears to be almost completely intact with little wear. From the research I've done and comparing to what others have found this appears to be a dolphin periotic bone. I've been to this beach many times and this is the first time I have found something like this (although I have found dolphin teeth rarely). I thought I would let the experts take a look and offer their opinions. Thanks for any assistance!! :)

It's a dolphin inner ear bone, and it's in great shape!

Good eye. Thanks for posting and welcome to the forum

It's hard to remember why you drained the swamp when your surrounded by alligators.

Periotic - these are pretty distinctive, and Bobby may be able to give a tighter identification.

Nice periotic. Not terribly uncommon on the beaches in Calvert Co, but most are worn a lot more than your specimen. Yours is in very good shape - congrats! Distinctive color is usually what draws me to them - not much else with that color on the beach.

Thank you all for the identification help!.. I have to say it is probably one of my favorite fossils that I have found so far.. :-)
