gcaruso
Anyone from the forum attending the two day N.Y. Paleontological Society Field Trip this weekend in Madison Country, NY? I'm new to the NYPS so this will be my first trip with them. I'm also relatively new to the forum so it would be nice to meet some of you in person. If you are going, let me know. After the trip, I'll post some pics of my finds.
Fossildude19
Not going, ( Am not a member of the NYPS, and too far away, in CT.) but I wanted to at least wish you good luck! Any idea of what you'll be finding? gcaruso
Thanks Tim! The sites we will be visiting are Middle Devonian, Hamilton Group. As the organizer describes it: Trilobites (3 species), Rolled & Straight Cephalopods, Gastropods, & large Brachiopods will be found as well as many other fossils. Shamalama
Was just up in that area two weeks ago.. prolific locations that you will find plenty at. Enjoy and take lots of pics! -Dave __________________________________________________ Geologists on the whole are inconsistent drivers. When a roadcut presents itself, they tend to lurch and weave. Jeffrey P
I will be busy this weekend so I won't be attending, but I wish you good luck. That is my favorite collecting area; especially Deep Springs Road and Geer Road quarries. I've been to those two sites in the past two weeks. Check out my Middle Devonian gallery to see some of my finds from that area. Besides trilos and cephalopods, bivalves, gastropods, and really fine gastropods are especially plentiful. Hope you do well and if you're interested in collecting in that area in the future, send me a post. Best wishes. Jeff
gcaruso
Thanks Jeffrey! It looks like there will be some good stuff to find. Hopefully the weather will hold out--I think we are supposed to get rain on Sat (that would be a bummer--especially since I'm getting over a cold). I'll definitely want to go back in the future. Perhaps in the spring we can arrange a meet-up! Thanks for the offer.
Brewcuse
I had never been to the Deep Springs quarry, I drove by where I presumed it would be two weekends ago and there was a camper & truck parked in it with a large posted/KEEP OUT sign at the entrance. Is that the right place?
gcaruso
This will be my first time there so I'm not sure.
Jeffrey P
That does sound like Deep Springs Road quarry. The couple who live in the trailer gave me permission to collect there when I visited in the spring and when I returned a couple weeks ago they remembered me and looked happy to see me again. They even kept some fossils for me. Before my first visit they had no clue about the fossil treasures at that site. They said they get a lot of visitors now.
