tmaier
That looks like an iron concretion. They are made of sand and sometimes limestone, and glued together with iron minerals. They often take the shape of "piles" like that. http://www.google.com/images?q=iron+concretion&btnG=Search&hl=en&gbv=1 Here's one of mine, that I thought was a coprolite. Looks like a poop pile, huh? Notice that they often have a very domed and smooth bottom. Edited October 1, 2014 by tmaier
