Fossils From East Texas (Woodville Area)

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone!

These are fossils my dad recently found, and he's curious if anyone has any idea what they might be. We think at least one of them could be bone, or antler. I'm also at the end including close up pics of the ammonite I referenced in my previous post in case anyone wants a better look. I'd get better pics but these are the best they can give me right now. They were found in a riverbed in East Texas.

All those dark pieces definitely look like bone to me. I don't know a lot about bone, and there are some people here who are very good, so be patient and you should get some responses.

And a fantastic ammonite...

Thanks. I'm glad to know they are in fact bone.

I didn't think horses got that big, did they? Those tooth looking bones are massive.

Teeth from modern horses (in the past few million years) can be very big. In anticipation that the bone people GET OUT OF BED AND SHOW UP FOR WORK ( :D) , you should take some pictures of the ends of that fossil. The chewing surface is the most diagnostic point of the teeth.

Those bone people party hardy and get up late...

The top row, 2nd and 3rd pics sure look like a sloth tooth to me. Please post more pics of each end. Make sure you get clear pics. Use the macro setting on your camera. The 2 pics on row 2 are a vertebral centrum of a mammal. The last 3 pics are ammonite. But I'm really interested in the possible sloth tooth. The pros will be here soon and they may want better pics of it also.

Sloth teeth, how interesting! All of those bones were found within 30 feet of each other, I wonder if it was all the same animal?

I told my dad to get some more pictures and better quality so he's going to do that tonight. I'll post more as soon as he emails them to me.

Here are more pictures of the bones. Any help IDing would be appreciated. So far it's been suggested to be horse or sloth? Maybe a sloth tooth in there?

The pics are better and I still think the 3rd and 4th row are a sloth tooth. Let's see if some others can confirm......

Looks like a fine sloth tooth to me. Guessing Megalonyx rather than Paramylodon based on size, but that's a bit of a stretch for my acumen.
