Harry Pristis
I've been making images of a corallum which I've had in storage. This one is from APEC shell pit in Sarasota County, Florida. The age is Pliocene. I had set it aside to take to the Ste. Marie aux Mines show, but didn't get back there. I thought I might put one of these images in my invertebrates album. When I set out to ID this corallum, I realized how little I know about coral. So, I've done some searching and reading before I put labels on the images. I know there are coral experts here. Would some of you please check my labels for accuracy? I don't want to mislead anyone with bad info in the Gallery. Ludwigia
Sorry I can't help you with any further information, but I just wanted to tell you here how impressive your photo exhibitions are. Plantguy
Hi Harry, great specimen and photos as always. Glad you are going thru your specimens--looking forward to the outcome details so I can learn some things and make some labels! I have a number from Sarasota as well that I was starting to take photos of about two weeks ago and was eventually going to chase ID's for. I know the hermit crabs gastropod/coral encrusting ones are mainly the Septastrea marylandica. On yours, thought Siderastrea had hexagon shaped walls/sides to them like these I have? At first glance I also thought you had two different species.. maybe just an overgrowth of the same species?...I was thinking yours might be something like a Solenastrea. I''ll stop speculating and shut up and wait for those who actually know something. Regards, Chris
Harry Pristis
Chris . . . Thanks! You inspired me to look further. The corallum is Dichocoenia caloosahatcheensis Weisbord, 1974. Unmistakable . . . now. I've got to go back and change those labels. I appreciate the feedback! http://pristis.wix.com/the-demijohn-page What seest thou else In the dark backward and abysm of time? ---Shakespeare, The Tempest
