I believe that repetitive injuries are known from English Longbowman skeletal remains, but they were professional soldiers probably shooting many arrows per day. Does any hunting culture really cast that many spears to cause that kind of injury? Very interesting.

I had an archaeology professor who made mention of a study that basically said Neanderthals exhibited injuries consistent with modern day rodeo riders. So, not just the throwing but close interaction with large animals.

I have read similar. They are making the point that it is possibly repetitive, possibly from spear throwing. Lots of possiblies there, think they are stretching. Could also be that is a minor point that the crew is making, and certainly worth looking into, but put into prominence by the writer of the article.

I've been in research groups that had reporters from the popular press visit us. They are always liberal arts people with very little understanding of science. They need to return to the office with a real grabber of a news story. They hear "blah, blah, blah, (real science stuff, don't understand or care), blah, blah". Then the person talking will sometimes end with a wild speculation that seems exciting, because the reporter has obviously stopped listening. THAT part the reporter understood and THAT becomes the headline. :D

I was involved in chaos research back when it was in vogue. A newspaper reporter came and toured our lab. After a long talk about our experiments in control of chaotic systems, somebody mentioned that the stock market showed signs of chaotic behavior. The news story was put into the Business section of the paper and read "Researchers Investigate Method of Stock Market Control". It was kind of embarrassing. :D
