sixgill pete
I went out to my pile in the backyard a little while ago and found this bone. Is this some type of bird bone? It is about 13/16 inch long, broken as you can see. RichW9090
Looks like bird - maybe a worn proximal humerus? The plural of "anecdote" is not "evidence".
sixgill pete
Rich, thanks for weighing in on this. Bird material is not common inside the mine, but not uncommon either. But as far as the spoil piles, this is the first I personally have seen. I realized from the onset that the bone was probably to worn / damaged to get past an ID as bird. Thanks again. Auspex
I think it's a distal ulna; too worn to ID beyond Aves, but the Alcids are well known from there. sixgill pete
Thanks for looking Auspex. It is my first confirmed bird bone so I am kind of excited about it. Boesse
Yup, agree with Auspex - distal ulna is what came to mind as well. Take a flick through Olson and Rasmussen 2001 and see if anything looks close to it - but, given the incompleteness I doubt an ID past Aves is possible.
