Cleaning A Black Cat Mountain Trilobite - Progress...

Texas Fossil Hound

Recommended Posts

This is a Black Cat Mountain trilobite I am working on. I am not quite finished, but I thought I would show some progress. Not as good as Bob Carroll, but not too bad.

I just love these BCM Bugs!!

Wow! The preservation on that specimen is incredible! Nice Job! I don't have much fossil hunting left in me but I think now I want to go to BCM!!!

You are doing great and the bug looks good. I have cleaned several from BCM. Did this one for a forum member recently.

The more you prep the better you will become.

What species is that? Looks like some kind of Phacops.

Indeed, the trilobite being prepped is a fantastic example of the phacopid: Lochkovella (=Reedops) deckeri

It appears to be partially enrolled but probably complete if you decide to remove it entirely from the matrix.

Jgcox did a brilliant prep job on the specimen- I cannot thank him enough!

Excellent work, Texas Fossil Hound! I'd love to see it when it's complete!

Ludwig, I am using an ARO and microjack 3 air scribe to remove the big matrix and a steel dental pic sharpened under the microscope to pic at the surface matrix under the microscope. Final pass is 17mg sodium bicarb through an air abrader.

It is slow going, but the result is a pretty decent amount of detail.
