sixgill pete
These items were found yesterday at the bottom of a quarry in the base sands of the River Bend Formation, early Oligocene in eastern N.C. These items came directly from the sands, no other sediments present, so they can be confirmed as from the River Bend Formation. Teeth, both Abdounia furimskyi around 6 mm .... Echinoid Psammechinus carolinensis, these are small regular echinoids, smallest one here is about 5mm largest I found is 1/2 inch Pectens 5/8 inch ... Psammechinus carolinensis with encrusting bryzoan ...... JohnJ
It's a small world.... Very interesting finds, Don. I'm partial to the echinoid. I know how tough it is to photograph them when they are that small. The human mind has the ability to believe anything is true. - JJ
sixgill pete
John, they are tough to photograph. But, I have found it easier since I bought my scope with a 2 megapixel camera. Looking for them in that very very fine white sand is not easy on the eyes either. RickNC
You're right they were hard to see but once I found one it became much easier. I'll have to look again but I think the shark tooth I found in that stuff may be the same as those you have there only with a damaged root. Al Dente
Nice finds. The teeth have been moved from Negaprion to Abdounia so they are now Abdounia furimskyi. Did you find any Squatina teeth? They are fairly common in the sand. You can also find Echinocyamus wilsoni by fine screening the sand.
sixgill pete
Rick the "sponge" is actually a bryzoa, the one I ID'd as Meandropora cf. cerebriformis. Tim, Charlie, Ryan and Lisa. Thank you!! And Charlie, yes I am very pleased with how my scope camera is working. John, I would highly recomend it. Eric, unfortunately I did not have a fine sifter with me, but I will next time. I did not find any Squatina teeth, but I think the tooth Rick found is one. Also thanns for the update on the teeth I posted. sixgill pete
Here are a few more things from the sand. Vert. about 7mm accross. I at first was thinking ray, but not so sure. Any thoughts? It is pretty worn. Ray tooth frag, 3/8 inch ...... and a barnacle plate, small about 7/8 inch across ...... and a close up of one of the barnacles. Any thoughts on an ID? .. Plax
Thanks Don. Do you have the id on these pectens? I have not been able to find it. http://fossilworks.org/bridge.pl?a=taxonInfo&taxon_no=17003 but may be something else, do you have Ward's Belgrade quarry section? It's in Ward's VMNH pub from '92. It shows the section and fossils found at various levels and lithologies. Note that the Belgrade was considered early Miocene at the time. We always called it Rebeccapecten but never a particular species. Googling Pecten trentensis shows a few similar images. LoneRanger
Great photos, Don. The tiny silica/quartz crystals covering the surface of the fossils makes them even more interesting to me. There are also a few dark black crystals on the surface -- wonder what mineral these are.
sixgill pete
No, I don't have Wards Belgrade section.
