jcbshark
Today we had a pretty big group of members get together for a walk in hunt in a Desoto County creek. First, I would like to thank everyone who made it out today to hunt. It was great seeing the folks who have come out before and all the new folks we got to meet as well:). I would also like to apologize for having to leave a little early but my wife and kids were on the edge of hypothermia lol. Well it wasn't that cold but with the water at 63 this AM I was very happy to have a wetsuit on and wasn't quite sure how those in shorts were able to stay in the water all day! I did a lot more socializing than hunting and my lack of finds show it, however I did get pics of most of the folks that came( with the exception of a few, sorry ) and hope some of the folks who went will give TFF the fossil show they hope for with pics of their finds. Just before dark I was sent a pic of something someone found that is just AWESOME, but I'll let him tell his story! Btw CONGRATS Ben, Joan and Caroline (DeFallen) who made the trip all the way from Germany Here's a nice Hemi that Ben and his family had found Chris (Plantguy)with a bird bone Caleb (Scramblered) got some digging inMy daughter Riley with a piece of Dugong ribMy other daughter Reagan with an artifact she found lol Dean ( NYBoss) was along as wellJim and Sally ( Beachbum) with a little Mako April and Don who came with John (Sacha)Cris (Cris) and Kyle (Addicted2fossils) came down from Fort WhiteZach who came along with John as wellTrish who along with Don, April and Zach were part of a PBS fossil show that John is also working onThey also brought a few kids to do some hunting.... to be continued, to many pics Every once in a great while it's not just a big rock down there! I didn't get any pics of me but they did film me a little so if it makes the cut I'm a very fashionable fossil hunter! Every once in a great while it's not just a big rock down there! digit
Wish I could have been there but it looks like you had quite the crowd. I'm on my way back home from a coral reef survey mission to the Solomon Islands. I'm in the middle of a 31 hour boat trip back to Guadalcanal and then 3 days of flights (terrible connections) through Papua New Guinea, Brisbane, and Los Angeles and then a few day layover in Chicago for the Turkey Day holiday before returning to South Florida. Looking forward to getting back into 'fossil mode' for a while before my next mission. Can't wait to hear about the AWESOME find--I wait with bated breath. Cheers. -Ken

Paleoworld-101
Wow! What a great TFF get together! Nice finds too. "In Africa, one can't help becoming caught up in the spine-chilling excitement of the hunt. Search4
TFF Member Hunt 2014!!!!!!! It was real nice to see some familiar faces again. Last season seemed so long ago when we last hunted together. It was a pleasure meeting some new folks too and finally put a name to some TFF usernames! lol Wish you could have all stayed longer to hunt but I know many of you drove quite a few hours to join us. And Jeff, no worries you were definitely there with us in spirit lol. Matter of fact, when I found the tooth Caleb and Chris were like "man I wish he was here right now!" Cris and Kyle (Addicted2fossils) getting down to business. Have to give these guys respect for going right after the most inhospitable areas and coming away with some sweet finds on just their first visit! Jim and Sally (Beachbum) and Paul (Cam28), always a pleasure hunting in your company! Caleb (Scramblered) and Chris (Plantguy) and Jeff (Jcbshark)the halfway mark Whoa, I was so beat after the hunt last night. Caleb, Chris, and I stayed out until 4:30.I don't think we would have stayed that long but Caleb found a nice area that had been cleared out since last season and was a lot deeper as a result of the powerful current. He immediately found a nice little meg and eventually found another one a few minutes later. I started sifting about 20ft from him and probably moved a half yard of material before I eventually found anything respectable. As I sifted in this hole I kept coming up with large stones and pieces of Dugong rib. I knew if I was going to continue working this area I was going to completely wet as the hole was nearing 5ft deep. Finally I just worked up the nerve and got fully into the hole. I know now why other members were wearing their dive suits. Everytime my shovel contacted something hard I'd joking say "there's that Mammoth tooth!" Nearing the end of my digs, I managed to smack the shovel on one more rock. The shovel stopped dead with a noticeable ring and I remember saying it was something heavy there that felt like a road brick. As I attempted to remove the rock I must have also dug up a stump of wood and thought I lost the rock. I felt around with the shovel and located the hard object again about 8-10 inches below the sand. I got my shovel completely under it and slowly broke the suction and lifted it up slowly so the water's current wouldn't swipe it off my shovel. As I lifted the shovel to my waist it was still submerged and I noticed a solid black object protruding from the sand on my shovel. It was a complete Mastodon molar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But I almost couldn't mutter the words to announce my find to Chris or Caleb. I remember saying "you guys have to see this" and as all of us stared in disbelief and utter amazement we took turns saying "I can't believe it, no way, that's unreal!Mastodon tooth, 3 gator teeth, deer and peccary teeth, ground sloth tooth frag, holmesina scute, broken mako, meg, garfish scale, partial ray plate, 2 puffer fish plates, various shark, antler branch, some ivory and 2 three-toed horse teeth!
