Santonian Sponge-Field. Reconstruction.

During the Santonian, sponge fields existed in our Saratov Region of the Russian Federation. They were like the Great Barrier Reef but with sponges instead of corals. I tried to reconstruct a small part of such a sponge field using sponges from my collection.

The idea of a sponge reef really kindles my imagination!

Thank you :)

Very interesting, and beautiful specimens together or separate.

Did some of the sponges build a reef framework, or did they bind or baffle the sediment? Or both? (Edit: I'm referring to the constructs in the field. :) )

Are the locations of the reefs already known, or do you find them by noting certain clues in the field (i.e. bedding or topographic expressions)?

Context is critical.

In our Santonian sponges built a reef framework.

Remains of that reefs are called Sponge Horizon:

It is full of sponges and parts of sponges. You can find it in each site with Santonian rocks.

Sponges are not so common as ammonites and shark teeth, but they are also beautiful fossils )))

Because of your efforts, I have a great affection now for sponges!

Really impressive 3D recreation!!!! I wasn't even aware that there were sponge fields. Your recreation looks like it consists of all different species of sponges. Did the sponge fields contain all different species intermixed like your recreation or did they contain areas of just one species next to areas of another species? How many different species of sponge can be found in a localized sponge field?
