I saw that recently, it's a great documentary.

I thought so too, so I posted it. :)

That is so cool! I'm new to all this, so I dont have anything academically to say. I just like it.

No need to have anything academic, just liking is how we all started.

I enjoyed the documentary, thanks for posting.

Jay

You're most welcome! :)

The Dallas Paleontological Society has arranged to present a lecture by Dr. Ibrahim this February. It's part of our Charles Finsley Lecture Series and you can find how to order tickets here. www.dallaspaleo.org .Tickets are priced to just cover the cost of the hall so if you're close to the Dallas area at the end of February this is a great opportunity.

It's no surprise to find out that Spinosaurus was bigger than T. rex or even the giant carchardontosaurids from Patagonia. Yet the Spinosaurus skeleton from Morocco has changed our perception of Spinosaurus regarding its overall build. We used to think that Spinosaurus had arms shorter than the legs, yet we now know that Spinosaurus probably lived like a hippo judging by the arms and feet.

True, or an alligator/crocodile.

It's quite interesting that so many huge predators could live in such a small space, relatively speaking, mainly because spinosaurus went after marine animals and not land dinos.

How likely is it that the hind limbs of Spinosaurus were really that short? Not trying to disagree in any way, just curious. Didn't they compare the lengths of hind limbs from several Spinosaurus specimens of different ages to get such proportions?

Fascinating, Spinosaurus just gets weirder and weirder the more we know about it :)

I don't think the hind limbs are short. What they said is that Spinosaurus is front heavy, so it will need more support up front which is why the front limbs had to be extended. They said they only found two specimens, the one destroyed in the WW2 bombing and the one Nizar Ibrahim recovered. What they did compare it to was Suchomimus and several other modern examples such as crocs and alligators.

Even though Dr. Ibrahim has decided the sail on Spinosaurus probably had no use other than display, I recently read something that has me wondering about another possibility. A paper in the 1997 issue of the Dallas Paleontological Society Occasional Papers by Thomas Vance discusses the presence of a nuchal and dorsal crest on many early drawings of mosasaurs. It seems the idea was eventually discarded but in the article he also mentioned the high dorsal spinous processes on the vertebrae of mosasaurs that "served as a site for muscle attachment. The muscles evidently aided in swimming.."

I know there is some difference in a spinous process on a vertebra and the spines on Spinosaurus but the idea has me intrigued. I suppose the answer would have much to do with whether the spines actually had similar muscle attachment areas and how firmly they were attached to the vertebrae. If this could have been a feature that aided in swimming, the size and shape of such muscles might even slightly change the look of the cross-section of the dinosaur, and the extra swimming power from such a muscle would certainly have added to the effectiveness of this awesome predator.
