jcbshark
Today, after two weeks of missing out on the great hunting Florida offers Chris and I were able to get out for a full day of hunting. We went to a tributary of the Peace and got there plenty early to make the most of the day. We left Chris' house at about 7:45 and after an hour drive and an hour paddle in the canoe we arrived at the promise land and dug until 4:30.We hit a couple different spots and did well at all of them but the last spot paid off in spades and I really wish we could have started there when we were fresh but we're still in the exploratory phase in this spot and normally start where we left off last time. The water was brisk(62) and I still am not sure how Chris can stay in all day without a wetsuit but at the rate great finds were popping out of our sifters we didn't really have time to get cold lol. Thanks for an EPIC hunt today Chris! Holmesina and Glyptodont osteodermsplenty of tiger teeth to go arounda couple of whale ear bonessome nice pieces of antler, one of which still has the skull attacheda deer tooth, an unknown tooth and an astragulusGator teeth and osteodermssome decent hemissome horse teeth, including the biggest one I've ever seen. Fortunately it had plenty of company todaybut here is my prize for today! Chris had a premonition and it was real. Even though it's not perfect it is my best Mastodon tooth yet!One more pic of the mastodon tooth. It's about 70% complete and in 2 pieces but I hope to find the rest next time! Thanks for looking and happy hunting! Every once in a great while it's not just a big rock down there!

Search4
All I can say is whoa. We put it in today! All those countless hours and weekends we spent digging in futility, in frigid waters, only to come home empty handed have finally rewarded us. I must have dug 50 tiger shark teeth. Maybe 14 Makos, 8 horse teeth, 8 gator teeth, 4 holmesina scutes, 5 tortois denticles, and a variety of other fossils. My large upper Mako measured 2 11/16", and the lower measured 2 1/4". This will be the day we compare all other days for a long time to come! Congrats on the Mastodon, awesome find! It was a pleasure sharing the excitement of that discovery with you!!! Yeah the water-resistant phone comes in handy don't have to worry about wet hands, or dropping in the water, especially in the rain. I really need to get a GoPro cam soon and start filming the action! Maybe we can do a how-to vine and call it, "this old sift." lol
Shellseeker
Chris & Jeff, Congratulations on a fantastic outing. These are the types of days all fossil hunters dream about. Beautiful Makos, a large unique Mastodon tooth, and plenty of fossils in every sieve. The cold and the rain really does not make a difference as long as there are prizes in the next sieve. Great to see the two of you hit pay dirt. The White Queen ".... in her youth she could believe "six impossible things before breakfast"

God, you must have flipped out when that big mako showed up in the shovel like that. Luck is the most important skill of a fossil diver.

beachbum
Great finds guys, you certainly outdid yourselves!! Chris said you were going to do well on this trip. I believe this was better than you expected. Excellent finds Jeff, especially the mastodon tooth and the mako's that you both found are nice. jcbshark
Thank you all for the comments! I hope the rains hold off and we can get back to this spot. Yesterday toward the end of the day,in the rain, while we were both worn out and knowing the time to leave was fast approaching, I kept telling Chris how awful it would be if this is the last shot we have at this spot this year. That Mastodon tooth popped out on what was one of the last sifts of the day and sure didn't make it easy to leave! Every once in a great while it's not just a big rock down there! Search4
Thanks seeker. I was not actually finding anything when it rained but at least the water temp came up a few degrees as the air hovered in the 70's. When Jeff and I hunt there really is no down time. From the time we get there till the time we leave, 5, 6 or 7 hours, the only time we stop digging is to take a drink and eat some jerky/ peanuts. 7 hours on Sat I managed to stop long enough to drink about 12 ounces of water and 4 ounces of peanuts. As I'm sure you can attest, it's the constant movement that keeps the hypothermia from setting in!

Regards, Chris Thanks Chris! Hang in there my friend, things are bound to turn around in your favor . We did have a great dig, but you know how that goes. And with mine and Jeff's track record this season, we have far more bad days than good. We all need to get together again, even for a walking site if nothing else, it's been too long. Check out the fossil ID section when you get a chance? I'll send you a link for a mollusk/ oyster looking bivalve I found yesterday. Thanks.
