Sneek Peek Of The Creep

I started on the Pterosaur sketch last night. I stayed up a bit longer then i should have last night (this morning....3am), because i am sick. But when the artistic Chee has been reached you need to let it flow. Plus i can't really shut off my brain when i get that way.

I decided to up the game and go bigger. This is 18"x24". I plan on drawing two or three of these guys on this sheet, so don't think this is anywhere near completion.

I started by lightly sketching the skull that i had found on Google. Then i added muscles, skin and textures. Im not sure about some of it, and it may change a bit. I find it extremely liberating to be able to sketch something that is open to interpretation. I also went to the Field Museum in Chicago for inspiration last weekend, but their Pterosaur collection isn't the greatest. :( But it was fun anyway.

It's quite creepy. Which is more of my style. And it looks a bit weird for now. So now i need to work on balancing it out.

WELL DONE!

You are indeed a gifted artist.

I will see if I can make a Fossil cartoon and post it, altough I am not even remotely as skilled as you are :envy:

Thanks guys! I like it so far.

The biggest problem so far is my 17month old son decided to draw with Daddy and stab it with a crayon. Now I'll have to draw where i really didn't want to.....oh well.

Thanks guys!

I wouldn't say "ugly", i find them intriguing. I didn't know a single thing about Pterosaurs before this. Now i know a few things. But they were neither Lizards, Bats (Mammals) nore Birds.

amazing rendition Charlie! I am currently reading my newest book, Pterosaurs, by Mark Witton, they are intriguing...i think any fossil book would benefit from illustrations of this caliber.

can't wait to see more

Thank you Carmine!

That is a dream of mine. I would love to work with Paleontologists or others to re-create creatures, whether it be sculptures, illustrations, paintings, etc.

I've started the second flying terror.......

never stop sketching, your a very gifted artist. You capture form incredibly with your shading techniques. Use good quality paper for your finished drawings, it matters when you are showing your work to professionals. Have you gone to school for art? You would be a great candidate for a scientific illustration undergrad program and its clear you do your research in advance of rendering. I'm really impressed!

You certainly have the talents to bring those long dead bones back to life.

Simply breathtaking.

I was always amazed at the reconstruction art. I remember an artist working with Ewan Fordyce to reconstruct penguins and dolphins - even "life scenes" a day in the life on an Oligocene beach for example, with a washed up odontocete and a couple of extinct penguins.

I know this is something Bobby (Boesse) is doing as part of his work now too.

Thank you Doc Mud. That would be very fun to do. I guess someone would just have to give me a shot, as i am not classically trained nore do i have a degree.....

I started the second Anhanguera, and im not a fan of the wing "markings". Also the wings are throwing me a bit off, mainly because im trying to just draw all of this from my head. I think some more homework is in order.

I'll probably tweak some things, but im done for tonight, so here ya go.....

I think you should seriously follow up on that. Maybe get in touch with finderskeepers? His profile indicates that he has experience in the area of scientific illustration. Perhaps he could make some contacts for you.

you've really managed to give grace to these ungainly forms, intuitive and masterful poses Charlie :)
