For what it's worth I've found very similar specimens wandering around the desert out near 29 Palms.I'll hazard a guess and say the "spray" patterns on the outside have more to do with mineralized crystal growth patterns imbedded in the host substrate that the agate was later formed in than anything biological: a void was created in the host rock (in this case a fracture in a heavily crystalized deposit of pegmatite, maybe...) which was later filled with layers of micro-crystalline quartz - an agate.I would also guess that you would be pleasantly surprised if you were to have the largest end sliced off and polished by someone with the proper equipment.
