Sydneylh
Could someone tell me if this is a tabulate coral fossil and if not what it might be? It seems to have plates up and down the inside of the coral "tubes" and to the right a cross section of individual coral 'tubes'? Thanks for any help! Auspex
You are correct, and for the reasons you cited; a colonial tabulate coral. Do you know the age? Ordovician, maybe? Sydneylh
You are correct, and for the reasons you cited; a colonial tabulate coral. Do you know the age? Ordovician, maybe? Hey Auspex! I'm not sure on the age, but in doing a lot of reading I believe that it could be from the Devonian period, however, your idea of it being from Ordovician could also be a possibility! Either way it's pretty amazing to know what I am holding! Do you have any recommendations for determining its age?
Auspex
Unless it was loose among gravel (and not associated with an in-situ formation), you could consult a geologic map of the area for a clue as to its age. The whole Des Moines area is indeed Devonian: LINK "There has been an alarming increase in the number of things I know nothing about." - Ashleigh Ellwood Brilliant “Try to learn something about everything and everything about something.” - Thomas Henry Huxley >Paleontology is an evolving science. >May your wonders never cease!
