Ny Eurypterids

Recommended Posts

Philosoraptor

Hello. I was wondering about what eurypterid fossils can be found in New York, specifically near Saratoga Springs as I have family in the area and I was hoping to go collecting in the area when I head up there. If you plan on going collecting soon then good luck and have a wonderful day.

I don't think any Eurypterids can be found there, as it is all Cambrian aged rock in that vicinity.

Do you know how close the nearest site for eurypterids is?

Somewhere over in Herkimer County would be the closest.

Probably about an hour and forty /forty-five minutes away.

Google Lang's fossils. A gentleman in the town of Ilion new York owns a quarry that has euryptrids. I do know there are rule about getting in to collect and what you can take out. But I don't know specifics.

Lang's is pretty much the place, if you can afford it ($$$$).

Lang's is too pricey for most people.

Pay $$$ to split rock, then pay $$$ for the fossils you find.

There are a few threads here on the Forum.

Not worth it, in my opinion.

I completely agree with Tim, Lang's is a big waste of time and money. New York has a lot of great fossil hunting adventures that won't break the bank. Instead of paying his astronomical prices for eurypterid scraps, you would be much better served purchasing one. Check on ebay as there are always a couple of good sellers that have complete specimens available with some frequency.

Thanks Jeffrey P. Could you give more detail on the Rock City Falls site? I think I found it (thanks to the wonders of google earth) but I'm not sure. Any details on what to bring and any tips would be greatly appreciated.
