nathanzx10r
A couple friends and I will be making the trip to Utah again this Labor Day weekend. We fly into Salt Lake on Thursday and fly back to Portland on Monday, so we will have 3 full days to explore/dig. We are setting up base camp (well...a hotel lol) in Delta. If anyone is up for joining us noobs, would love to have some local knowledge.
digit
All the local knowledge I can provide (not being a local myself) is that I had a splendid time and found lots of great stuff in Delta by going out with "A New Dig" (http://www.anewdiginc.com/). We popped for the "upper layer high end" dig (hey, you only live once!) and my wife and I really enjoyed it. There may be some TFF members who could suggest areas to hunt for yourself on BLM land but when time is short and you want a sure thing--go with local experience. Remember to post what you find here so you can make us all jealous. Some great environment photos and in situ shots of your bugs will really make for a compelling post which is sure to motivate others to start planning their trip to Delta. Cheers. -Ken
nathanzx10r
So what did you get from the upper layer? I went to a new dig last time and will more then likely do a day there again.
digit
I got mostly just bugs--several species but mostly Elrathia kingii but also some of the larger species (don't remember the name off hand) and the really tiny "double ended" looking ones. Many were in the matrix upside down and so were popped free of their confines with a good tap with a chisel and hammer off to the side. I have a bowl of these "free" trilos. Got many more in the matrix which display nicely and even a few nice "mortality layer" type plates with a nice arrangement of bugs. I guess there are a number of other Cambrian fossils that appear in the fossil record there but I was pretty focused on trilobites (a love of mine since I was single digit age) so that was my goal for my first (hopefully not last) trip to this area. Really enjoyed the experience. Cheers. -Ken
nathanzx10r
Thats cool. Looking on the map... I think I am, going to stay in Salt Lake City and split my time between Trilobites in Delta and fossil fish in Kemmerer,WY. That way we can enjoy a couple types of fossils. digit
That's exactly what we did on our last trip to the area. We also got in a little sight seeing in Grand Teton and Yellowstone. I'll see if I can dig up the phone number for one of the guys we went out with in Kemmerer (BTW: you'll love splitting oil shale for Green River fishes) as he took us out to an area he knows on BLM land where you can collect Blue Forest petrified wood if you are interested: pet wood--eocene fish--bugs, a perfect trip trio. Cheers. -Ken
nathanzx10r
Thanks for the info. I will see if we have enough time. 3 days goes so fast LOL
FossilForKids
I can give you directions to the cowboy pass ammonite locality. If you are willing to walk and break some rock you find some interesting stuff. If only my teeth are so prized a million years from now!
nathanzx10r
We have decided to split our trip up between Utah and Wyoming. We will do 1 full day of Trilo hunt and then we will leave that night to Wyoming and spend 2 days there doing fish. Should be a fun trip
amour 25
Man if I did not have a show coming up, I would drive there. Good luck. Jeff
