California Oysters

Recommended Posts

These oyster supposedly came from Contra Costa County which is east of San Francisco, CA.

They measure from 12x9cm to 13x11cm. Any ideas what they might be?

You can see them in person at McCone Hall at UC Berkeley's Cal Day, Saturday April 18th where I will be displaying local fossils, rocks and minerals. Go to the Northern California Geological Society tables. Also, see the other fossil exhibits and tour the UC Paleontology Museum.

Bring in your fossils (and rocks) for us (and UC) to ID.

My goal is to leave no stone or fossil unturned.

Hertlein (1951: Ca. Div. Mines Geol. Guidebook 181:188-189) figures an oyster called Ostrea bourgeoisii from Kirker Pass, west side of Markley Canyon, upper San Pablo Fm/group.
