Sedona

I will be visiting Sedona this June and am wondering if there are any fossils to be found in the area. I know about Petrified Forest National Park but that's a bit over 2 hours away and I was hoping for some places where I could take some finds home with me.

This website may be of service to you.

Flagstaff and Black Mesa are both about an hour away, Flagstaff to the north, and Black Mesa to the south.

Check and research sites in both Coconino and Yavapai counties.

Regards,

EDIT : for additional links.

Check out "Minerals, Fossils, and Fluorescents of Arizona" by Bearce.

I especially like the Martin Formation that is crowded with Thamnopora corals off of the Control Road north of Payson and below the Mogollon Rim. You will find more fossils the further away from the road you go.The Redwall limestone is also productive in that area. Don't bother with the new Kohl's Ranch site.

See photo of 90+ lb block of Martin FM that I found north of Payson. I had to carry it 1/2 mile- ouch.

It has both sticklike Thamnopora and round colonies of Pachyphyllum. See close up of Pachyphyllum coral.

Thanks for the information and links guys. Those are some nice corals! Judging from the websites it seems there's a nice variety of inverts and fish material to be found. Also appears that there are some Permian age rocks in Sedona.

If anyone has experience collecting ammonites or Permian/Triassic vertebrate material please chime in!
