Fossil Skin Fragment

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I have managed to find an interesting piece for me. It seems that it is part of skin. It is around 4 inches x 3 inches.

Other is part of a skin with bone. It is similar in size.

Maybe someone can help with info about what this is?

What about it makes you think it is a skin impression?

Do you know the geologic age of the deposit?

I do not know what else this could be so this is my guess about skin. I have seen in pictures that on skin some dinosaurs have like points.

Both fragments were found in the same place so I guess they are from same animal. Maybe I am wrong.

I have no idea about age of the deposit. Found them in Himalayas.

Welcome to the forum. I don't see fossil skin either. Since we don't know the age your fossils it makes identification a little harder. A lot of times the surface of bryozoans can look like skin. I think your second specimen could be an in-filled burrow or something else that filled with sediment prior to fossilization. I think the rough texture of your second specimen may be the result of freeze/thaw action on limestone.

If this could be from the Paleozoic I would suggest that the shape on the lower left could be the way horn corals sometimes look. It's not a view you will find online, but poorly preserved and somewhat obscured by concretion perhaps.

Thanks for hints! Is there some more literature about corals and stuff like that?

I have additional picture for second pice from side:

Also have 3rd piece that is fully encircled and has more rugged structure in one part.

Hello,

Your 3rd item is a geologic structure called a Septarian nodule.

I agree with Tim.
