Khyssa
In late June a friend and I will be taking a road trip that will start in New Orleans. The only other stop that we are firm on is the Crater of Diamonds State Park in Arkansas. We only plan on staying in New Orleans for 2 or 3 days and after that we've discussed heading into east Texas for some sightseeing and fossil hunting. I would absolutely love to find some mosasaur, ammonite, dinosaur of any sort fossils but, having never been to Texas before, have no idea where to go. The extent of my knowledge is the bits I've read about on this forum. The dates we would be in Texas are probably between June 23-27. I know that this is in the middle of most peoples work weeks but am hoping to find someone familiar with the area to join us on a hunt. I will be bringing the gear that I use for river hunting in Florida (screens and shovels) as well as a couple rock hammers (not that I'm all that experienced with them!). And even if no one is available, if someone would be willing to PM some locations that would be good for us to go that would be very appreciated! Also, any suggestions of non-fossil hunting places of interest we should visit would also be welcome. After Texas we will be heading up to the Crater of Diamonds. We don't plan on going any further north than there but I wouldn't mind doing some fossil hunting while in that area. I don't even know what types of fossils are common in Arkansas. I'd like to find fossils that are not found in Florida. Things like plant, petrified wood, crinoid fossils would be great. I wouldn't mind finding artifacts or interesting rocks either. Our last stop will be in Alabama, not sure where yet as I'll be dropping my friend off at a relatives house on July 1 before heading back to central Florida. I think it will be in central or south Alabama. Since I don't have to get home right away I'd like to make at least one stop in Alabama or southwest Georgia to hunt for fossils. I would rather not go any farther east in Georgia the Interstate 75 as I live on the west coast of Florida. My friend is visiting from Venezuela where she has been teaching for the past two years. She's pretty much left planning our stops up to me with the only condition being that we eat lots of mexican food. She may come to regret saying that because I would much rather be out fossil hunting then in a city shopping. Although I wouldn't mind visiting historical sites or caves or an interesting natural history or science based museum.
Cluros
Contact the Alabama Paleontological Society. I found them to be friendly and they took me on a great impromptu trip to several private coal mines for plant fossils. I would also reach out to any local rock hounding clubs. I get requests monthly for collecting sites and I have reached out to clubs with great success. It is helpful if you already belong to a club when contacting another club. Khyssa
Thanks for the suggestions, I didn't even think of doing that. I belong to the Tampa Bay Fossil Club and am looking into joining the Tampa Bay Mineral & Science club. I'll see about getting in contact with the Alabama Paleontological Society this weekend. I imagine Texas and Arkansas should have paleontological societies as well that I can look up.

Khyssa
Yes, it is very likely that I will be in the Dallas area as another member has sent me some great information on a park to visit in that area. Do you have any suggestions on where to find ammonites? What type of shark teeth are commonly found in the area?
JarrodB
The North Sulphur River is one of the top hunting spots in Texas for all fossils you named except dinosaurs. I'm a member of the Dallas Paleontological Society. I'm off work June 27 and would be glad to show you guys around the North Sulphur River or give you tips on where to go. Look at my gallery for examples of what I commonly find. You might also want to check out Mineral Wells fossil park in Texas. http://www.nautiloid.net/fossils/sites/north_sulphur_river/north_sulphur_river.html http://www.mineralwellsfossilpark.com/ Yes, it is very likely that I will be in the Dallas area as another member has sent me some great information on a park to visit in that area. Khyssa
Thank you but I went on that trip last year. I'll keep this information handy though as I want to make another trip into Texas although next time I really need to arrange to meet up with someone. My last trip wasn't all that successful.
