Whitby Fossil

Help please,

I picked this up on the beach at Whitby.

It looks as if it is either bone or wood.

Can anyone identify it for me?

I think you are right,looks like petrified wood(plant material),maybe Jet(lignite),a result of high pressure decomposition of wood of trees of the family Araucariaceae from early Jurassic age.May contain pyrite.

Looks like a bit of pyritised driftwood, jet is glossy and black and stable, this might not be. Make sure you soak it well to get all of the salt out of it and then dry it carefully.

I agree that it is fossil wood, and that it is preserved as other than jet.

Thank you for your replies.

Particularly soaking to get rid of salt, thats a good hint.
