Bev
Ordovician Galena Formation probably SE Minnesota I found this rock a while back and picked it up because it is quartzite replacement and absolutely stunning in the sunshine - sorry, the pics don't do it justice. :-( I keep looking at it and maybe, just maybe it might be a fossilized coral. So, I thought I'd see if anyone else thinks it might be a fossil. :-) Continued... The more I learn, I realize the less I know. Rockwood
I think it's got to go geo.. If it ever was a coral the image has been lost.
Bev
Thanks Rockwood! Do you have any idea what could cause this kind of geologic formation? The more I learn, I realize the less I know. Rockwood
I'm not a geologist, nor do I know anything about that formation. It does remind me of a piece I collected from my area though. It was in a pocket that had been exposed when glaciers broke up a ryolite deposit (Mt. Kineo). I suspect it is recrystallized volcanic glass. It may not be and it may not relate to anything in your area. It's just a thought.
Bev
Wow, thanks Rockwood for sharing! Given that I just picked it up on the ground fossil hunting it may well have come down with the glaciers. There was a lot of volcanic activity in northern Minnesota. Rather fun to think about! THANK YOU!!! The more I learn, I realize the less I know.
