newmtdigger
So I found this over the weekend and I'm not really sure where to start. From the corner that I chipped off in the field it looks like it could be a nice layer of baculites. Any tips, ideas, pointers? It would be nice to end up with a "plate" of baculites. Ptychodus04
Is it in a hard concretion or just shale? Do you have an air scribe? I wold start scribing from the top using the exposed bit as a reference point so you know where the bedding plane is. Take off thin layers, keeping your tool at a ganging angle to minimize the chance of damaging the baculites. newmtdigger
There is a softer sandstone on top but then it into a pretty hard concretion. I'm new to all of this so no fancy are scribe yet, just my trusty hand tools and an electric engraver. Maybe this is a good one to put on the back burner until I get more experience under my belt. You can do it with an electric engraver. I used one for several years prior to purchasing an Aro. Just take it slow. The electric engravers will burn up if you use them too long without giving them a cool down period.
