Plan Of Attack

So I found this over the weekend and I'm not really sure where to start. From the corner that I chipped off in the field it looks like it could be a nice layer of baculites. Any tips, ideas, pointers? It would be nice to end up with a "plate" of baculites.

Is it in a hard concretion or just shale? Do you have an air scribe?

I wold start scribing from the top using the exposed bit as a reference point so you know where the bedding plane is. Take off thin layers, keeping your tool at a ganging angle to minimize the chance of damaging the baculites.

There is a softer sandstone on top but then it into a pretty hard concretion. I'm new to all of this so no fancy are scribe yet, just my trusty hand tools and an electric engraver. Maybe this is a good one to put on the back burner until I get more experience under my belt.

Here is an excellent link to prepping fossils and what is involved, with other links with it.

You can do it with an electric engraver. I used one for several years prior to purchasing an Aro. Just take it slow. The electric engravers will burn up if you use them too long without giving them a cool down period.
