Smith Lake Fossil Hunting

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know of some public-access fossil-hunting opportunities (sites) in the vicinity of Smith Lake, about 20 miles northwest of Birmingham, Alabama?

Not on Smith Lake . But in the Winter you can go to Cedar Creek Lake near Russellville and there are several areas around the

lake where you can collect in the Tuscumbia Formation "limestone" You find pentrimites , blastoids , brachiopods , archemedes

' crinoids and even an occasional starfish . There is also a site called "Foxtrap" just east of Russellville on Foxtrap creek .

I would have to look at a map closely to give you directions and where the land owner lives . He has always been very nice about

allowing people to collect on his property .

Also check out the Birmingham Paleontological Society's website . They go on frequent field trips and have a lot of good information .

Cliff .
