Salvageon Posted June 4, 2015 Share Posted June 4, 2015 I couldn't stand it and went out to my new site in the Fort Union/ Hell Creek formation in central Montana for a couple hours despite the mud and found lots of plant material with straight grain and almost a reed look. This guy was in the middle of the sample. It is segmented and curved. Is it a worm or maybe a reed? Also there were what looked like seeds. I found different things but don't want to overdo. Salvageon Posted June 5, 2015 Author Share Posted June 5, 2015 (edited) I looked up your suggestion and came up with pictures of the Horsetail root and it looks very similar. Then it showed a fossil Horsetail seed and it looked just like this from my collection. I have found several "seeds" and plenty of straight "sticks" or "stems" like the ones in my other "seed pod" post. As there were no pods I couldn't be sure they were the same. I'm beginning to think they are the same specie. The pods might just be something they did in season and weren't always present or you have to just be lucky and find the right part of the plant. I have some of the big fossil stems or sticks I found with this root. These stems and root are way bigger than the pod fossils though. Thanks to all for the interest. Salvageon Posted June 5, 2015 Author Share Posted June 5, 2015 Here is part of the rock it came out of. I thought the sectioning was rock fractures. Now I think it is the fossil itself.
