Looking For Some "starter" Fossils For My Sons

If you check out my thread in the "fossil digs" section, you will see that my sons and I had a blast digging up some trilobites and some other goodies over the past 2 weeks. I have a bunch of small pieces that I would love to trade with some other newbies to the hobby, or to anyone who has a bucket full of things they have outgrown just sitting in the corner somewhere. I realize that I won't be getting a t-rex skull for any of these, but anything with a wow factor to a 6 and a 9 year old would be amazing.

ok...you can add a 38 year old to that list too, this is a great hobby that all 3 of us are eager to jump in to :)

I have a bunch of different crinoid pieces available, will work on some pics in just a bit. Would love to get some ammonites or shark teeth to get them started if possible

I have a pile of kid fossils in my garage, mostly imperfect TX Cretaceous echinoids, maybe ammonites, etc...I don't rightly remember, but it could be 100 pcs. If you pay flat rate shipping, you can have them all for free, no return fossils required as I continually high grade for best use of space. Feel free to PM me if interested. I like to give the strapping youngsters a boost when I can. At a certain point, certain specimens mean more to someone else than they do to me.

That is very nice of you Uncle! If I were you I would jump all over that TS.

Otodus shark teeth from Morroco are interesting, cheap starter fossils.

As does Uncle Siphuncle, I too have many fossils that I keep specifically for the younger generation. It is always a privilege to provide to our youth. If your sons would like a sampling of Ordovician and/or Devonian fossils send me a message. I will outdo Uncle Siphuncle and even pay the postage. Dan, I am a kid at heart!! Do I get ammonites and echinoids??? Just "kidding".

You and your sons will be absolutely thrilled to receive from Jcbshark! Though I've not traded or the such with the others, they are excellent members on TFF, and I am sure their gifts will warrant much enthusiasm as well :)

I'd recommend mosasaur teeth from Morocco, dinosaur bone and eggshell fragments, and partial megalodon teeth as well. They're neat and pretty cheap too.

I'd love a giant megaladon tooth. We saw some in person a few years ago in Florida and they have been on my radar ever since. Once the smoke clears from that 12 day vacation, I plan on buying one. Very impressive piece!

In all honesty, a weekend trip to Florida isn't a crazy idea. We can be at the border in less than 3 hours. We go there quite often. Guess I can start researching good dig sites for teeth and plan that for a trip before school starts. That would be great!

  • 3 weeks later...

I have plenty of Cretaecous shells, carbonized wood from New Jersey, fern leaves and plant matter in shale from St Clair, PA which I would give to encourage kids to learn about fossils. These are common fossils you may already have, otherwise you are welcome to a few examples.

PM sent.

You guys are amazing. Fossils have become a daily thing in my house now. Whether its the kids finding future hunting locations, or just asking about things that you guys have sent, its definitely becoming a fun hobby for all 3 of us. They have been sorting their pieces out and giving items to their friends trying to get them involved as well. We definitely appreciate these. They are trying to convince me to redo their room in a dinosaur theme as opposed to the super hero stuff they have now, haha.

Hey, if you PM me your adress I will send your sons both a fossilised trilobite tail that I picked up locally (Amsterdam, Holland)

The fun part is that these actually come from Belgium (Carboniferous) but were found by me in rocks that the City of Amsterdam imported from Belgian quarries to re inforce the canal banks. Small bits but unique.

I can also get you some rough (yet treated with preservative) Mammoth teeth but these.

You will love the stuff JCBSHARK will send. He sent me teeth in trade and they are awesome!

Pat
