Shellseeker
Like others, I am sometimes unsure whether to add a post to ID, Hunting trips, or Q&A when I have some topics that cover more than one area. To tell the truth, I just randomly choose. I am squeezing trips in, going out 3-4 days trying to beat the rainy season. It is raining heavily most afternoons and sometimes we get caught in the rain. this week (3 trips) I managed to avoid the weather with cloudy and overcast and down pours shortly after scampered back to vehicles. I do not think I have a favorite spot, but I am fortunate to have hunting partners who do have a favorite spot and have come to think of me as a good luck charm. It does not get better than that... I actually have a place in mind to go hunting IF a day opens up, but that is unlikely before the rains force me to higher ground. Some recent superior results: Getting any part of a jaw with teeth is rare and found a fossilized rat mandible with complete molars and canine; then yesterday, this this rather impressive finds. I hear this is lower left mandible from my hunting partner. This is my best find ever for Tapir. Today, I was in a different environment, much more marine fossils (but no Megs). The sting ray barb is 2.5 inches, and clockwise, Kogiopsis sp., equus lower packing tooth, large pristine file fish vert, sting ray dermal denticle (see separate photo) and horse wolf tooth. Quite a variety and lots of quality. I do have a question about this Kogiopsis tooth. At first, I thought it was a tapir canine based on the heavily sharpened point. Many of the Kogiopsis teeth I have found have an actual point. Does this slant sharpened point imply a specific position in the jaw or just a random positioned upper tooth? So here is one that stumped me.. Initially I thought it was a huge base for a deer antler. Then I thought hoof core. My hunting buddy suggested Vert. I really do not know. Dimensions: 1.8 inches high, 2.1to2.3 inches in diameter. All comments appreciated . Sacha
All very nice Jack. We've been pretty lucky so far, so I'm going Monday and hope I get another day in before the deluge.
jcbshark
I really like the tapir jaw Jack, congrats! To me the last piece looks like a worn glyptodont osteoderm or vert: ) Edited June 14, 2015 by jcbshark Every once in a great while it's not just a big rock down there!
