Hey guys, I bought this at a reputable shop in Hawaii and they labeled this necklace as a meg. I see what I think are slight cusps on the upper sides of the tooth. I was wondering if I may have gotten lucky and purchased a chub? Thanks in advance!

Hi there!

I had a chub tooth and it did have similar semi-cusps as well. They are not as pronounced as the Angustidens cusps, but still distinguishable.

Here is a picture!

Sincerely,

Jay

Thanks man, mine has different cusps compared to yours. I have no idea what it could be, I know Megs don't have cusps. Thanks! :D

Jay, I do not think your tooth is a chubutensis. I think it is a small meg. What you are calling cusps, at least to me, just look like folds in the cutting edge of the tooth. If you have the collection details (where found, geologic age or formation) you could possibly tell for sure. Remember, chubutensis was only a species for a very very short geologic time in the early / middle Miocene.

Frty12345, your tooth, I also think is a meg. Remember, some small immature megs do in fact have small cusps on the tooth. Again, good collection information can tell you for sure if it is or is not. However, in your case we know it is not possible due to where you purchased it. But, in my opinion it is a small meg.

Thanks Pete, I didn't know that some small megs had cusps. I have two other small megs and they don't have them so I just assumed that all Megs didn't have cusps and that it meant that mine might be a Chub. I appreciate the help :).

Hello again.

The orange tooth I showed was found by a diver at the Meg Ledge off the coast of Southern Carolina. He claimed it was from layer below that of the regular Megalodon teeth, and that is the cause for the different color and better preservation of the tooth.

Comparatively, the surface level Megalodon teeth from the same area are worn out, and of a different, more grayish coloration.

Here are some pictures for comparison.

Pete is correct, juvenile Meg teeth do have cusps sometimes as well, and making a conclusion does depends on the geologic age and formation of the find.

Sincerely,

Jay

Thanks for the feedback everyone! I have no idea where they got it from but my best assumption if diving off the coast of Florida.

It would be really helpful and much less annoying if you got rid of that ridiculous signature line graphic.

Rich, I agree. Much too large, and distracting.

However, ...there is a really cool feature under the Manage Ignore Preferences section of your profile page settings that allows you to ignore signatures.

I tested it on this one - it works like a charm! :)

I shouldn't have to ignore all signatures just because one is obviously annoying.

Agreed. On my site we have a signature size limit. This one would quickly be removed or resized.

Hi,

I agree with you : the signature is far too big and it is annoying, signatures should have a maximal size beyond which it would not be possible to put them, I don't want to ignore all the signatures just for one person...

Sorry, I guess I wasn't clear in my instructions.

You don't have to ignore everyones signature. You select the member, then, just choose what you would like to ignore.

I totally agree it should be changed, but in the meantime, this works for me.

Just an option available to you.

Regards,

EDIT:- You can also just click the x to the upper right of the signature, and select to ignore his signature, or to ignore all signatures, if desired.

Even easier than going to the ignore preferences page.

My sig? I could delete it...

You could.

It takes up more than half your posts, and is rather distracting, and honestly, very painful to look at.

You could also just resize the image until it is much smaller, and not so distracting.

How would I resize it? I'm sort of a noob when it comes to that kind of stuff.
