Gabe
Something I'm wondering, what is the origin of that method suggesting that for a each inch of tooth in slant length (assuming the largest tooth in the dentition) is equal to 10 feet of shark ? Was it a rule of thumb proposed by shark researchers or fossil collectors ? Is it scientifically usable as the other methods based on teeth morphometric to estimate the size of a fossil lamniform ? Auspex
I think it is an over-generalization of no scientific value. Auspex
Cmon, tell us what you really think! This tooth-size-to-body-size question has been asked and discussed in detail a number of times on the Forum; I am offering a synopsis of those authoritative critiques. To elaborate, there may be a rule of thumb applicable to extant species (where the ratio can be calculated), but it is not universal among all species of sharks, and certainly cannot be applied with confidence to extinct species with few or no known associated remains.
