InquisitiveOsteology
I need help identifying a few "potential" fossils I found on Topsail Island in eastern North Carolina, USA. Below are four coin size specimens. I have plenty of questions about each -- mainly, are they even fossils in the first place? -- but all and any additional information is also welcome Thanks! 1.) 2.) 3.) 4.) Harry Pristis
#1 and #3 could be scraps of beach-polished bone; but, probably none of these is a fossil. http://pristis.wix.com/the-demijohn-page What seest thou else In the dark backward and abysm of time? ---Shakespeare, The Tempest
InquisitiveOsteology
Thanks! To me, #4 slightly resembles part of a mandible. Do you have any ideas on that?
lissa318
These are all just speculation from a newbie but 1 kinda resembles part of a drum fish mouthplate. 2 a boring hole from a clam. 3 might be a small turtle shell piece and 4 no clue... Welcome to the forum!!!
InquisitiveOsteology
I appreciate the feedback. Still wish I could ID them, though *sigh*
lissa318
I'm pretty sure #3 is turtle can't be 100% sure though. #2 I'm also pretty sure is a boring hole and that one is modern. Look up drum fish mouth plates and compare to your first and see if it looks similar?! Edited July 4, 2015 by lissa318

sixgill pete
Sorry, 1,and 2 are worn rocks from offshore, probably from the dredge project, same as the items in your other post. #4 looks like a well worn piece of broken shell. #3 could be a very very worn piece of turtle shell, but it is so worn a positive ID would be very hard to make.
