Fossil Identification Help!

Recommended Posts

Last weekend I came across this fossil in a creek bed outside of Dallas, TX. It definitely appears to be some kind of a fossil, but it's awkward shape is leaving me wondering what exactly it is. I'm hoping someone can help me identify what it is and what type of animal it may have come from.

Let me know if there are any questions I can answer that may help.

Thank you!

Ryan

Welcome to the forum! It looks a little fishy to me (like a piece of a fish skull), but it is way outside of my area of expertise. I recommend that you add some dimensions...I guarantee the experts that actually know something will want that information.

Yeah same here, I don't have too much knowledge of fossils. To me, it mightlooks like you just came across a bone from a dead animal, but I'm not sure. From what I can see in the picture, it doesn't look too old. But I don't know that much. It could be really old, maybe not. I wouldn't know aha. It is very strange looking though

I would say you found a chunk of recent cow skull. The absence of mineralization in the interior of the bone and the overall light color is what I'm going on. Also, the bit of matrix still on the specimen looks like mud and creek gravel.
