I'm thinking it's a branch in a tree. It doesn't seem fully mineralized, but I get the sense that it is a fossil.

Lots of lignite in the new jersey Cretaceous.

Sometimes I will give a coat of 50/50 elmers glue/water

So it doesn't disintegrate.
