Hey PRK,

I have been posting My recent finds from STH all over the forum. So most of what I have has been shown already, but I would like to see what others have found there also. Having A collective posting on one string sounds really good. I hope others will too.

This is the best find that I have found there

Allodomus mandible.

7 x 2.5 inches.

This is stuff from 2 different trips a year or two ago.. Here is a matrix in different stages of prep. Didn't realize i had a 2 and a half inch tooth, just the tip was sticking out.

My main interest from STH is the micro shark and ray specimens. I have a good number of posts on TFF of STH micros. I've probably already posted these before but here are a few of the micros.

I also have a good number of macro specimens that I personally collected. Here is a 3.13" C. hastalis that I collected in 2010 on the Ernst Ranch.

The periotic is part of the inner ear structure in the skull.

Auspex beat Me to it, but it is a bone from inside the ear. (I did not know this a year ago, so do not feel bad. Hang around here and You will learn all sorts of neat things!!)

And this is a Miocene bullae. An amplification bone of a whale inner ear

It seems strange to Me-- I have found 14 whole periodics but only 1 broken bullae.

Are the bullae more fragile and less likely to fossilize?

Tony

PS That is a nice one -Paul!!

I am like Tony, in all the digs I have done there, I have found many periodics and only one bullae.

It seems I find one each trip I go. Here's one from my very last trip. I had good luck that trip; bullae, seal canine, and a meg

I agree tony--- if only people would pay more attention to the wonderful bones, Just a little care collecting and preparing will produce great treasures. It's hard to identify which bone it is, in cross section. Kind of a surprise pkg.

Could you explain what these lucky items are?
