Hello all,

Just recently got back from my long trip to Iowa. While I was there I took my daughter and nephew up to the Rockford area where I visited the fossil and prairie park. Rich full of brachiopods it was my first fossil hunting adventure. The kids loved it (so did this one!)and here are a few pictures I took of some of the fun and fossils we found.

I was hoping to hit the Point A dam trip on the way home but missed it. That will be my next trip very soon. I'm just wondering if there's any special permission I need or if it's fine to dig at the base of the dam in the Conecuh river?

Nice finds! Iowa is full of great fossils to be had. As far as your question is concerned, I do not have an answer. If you contact the local DNR office and just ask general questions you'll get the help you need.

Best regards,

Paul

Most people just show up at the Point A dam site. Technically you should contact the dam management but only large groups such as clubs usually bother and I have not heard of anyone being run off. You should not actually dig at the dam base, of course; that would certainly get some attention. People dig into the river bank downstream from the dam, and screen their diggings in the river. If you go be alert for any sirens or sudden changes in river level; when water is discharged from the dam the level can rise and the current can become dangerous very quickly.
