Lovely assortment of teeth with really great coloration. I see lots of Lemon Shark (Negaprion), Snaggletooth (Hemipristis), Atlantic Sharpnose Shark (Rhizoprionodon) and even some Tiger Shark (Galeocerdo and Physogaleus) teeth in that great gallery. The one that interests me the most appears to have multiple cusps and looks like a small Cow Shark (Hexanchidae).

We don't seem to get Cow Shark teeth down in my part of the state (or they are exceedingly rare if here at all). Because of their local rarity and the fact that they look so cool, they have been high on my shark tooth bucket list. Great finds all around. Looks like I need to visit Rattlesnake Creek and get some micro-matrix of my own to search through.

Cheers.

Hey-lo Ken,

Thank You for the comments and identifications. The tooth that You are calling a cow shark is not ( There is a nutrient groove in the root and the overall root shape is rounded). It was posted in the ID section where 2 people thought that it may be a pathologic hammerhead tooth, but I think it is a split file tooth (hammerhead works for Me).

I hope that You do get to rattlesnake creek and find some great things there.

Nice finds! Here are a couple Nurse shark teeth and a mystery tooth I recently found in some gravel from Rattlesnake creek. The armadillo scute I found while in the creek.

Cool finds! I enjoy reading these reports. Just a question, what kind of tooth is this? I found one very similar yesterday in an Oligocene site in MS, and do not know what it is (I don't know much about non-Cretaceous sharks).

Thanks for the comments. The tooth that You are asking about is a Hemipristis, Snaggletooth. It is one of the few teeth that I can identify. They do look very cool!

Here is one with the root intact...

Thanks! That helps a lot, this is the first of that kind for my collection. I found a few other teeth that I cannot identify, I will probably create a topic in the ID section soon. The Oligocene is a new adventure for me, and I am enjoying it!

Tony,

I was having another look at your Rattlesnake Creek finds, and realized that you have answered a question that I have had for a long time!

post-13648-0-23117300-1441542484_thumb.png

I have found many of these in a few of the matrices I've hunted, and always wondered what they were. Now I know. Thanks. :)

Thanks Julianna,

But I should not take credit for this one as I posted it in the ID section before I put it here.

Tony

PS I have more to show here and in the Post oak creek string, just have no time to play with My microscope.
