bothrops07
I'm fairly certain this is a humerus, but to what? I am a herpetologist and spend a lot of time along rivers. I came across this today as I was searching for frogs, and I decided to hang on to it to ID it. So far, I have been unsuccessful and I assume you guys are way better at this than me. The bone/fossil doesn't feel as heavy as most fossils I have come across, but it is definitely heavier than bone. It is completely black underneath the crispy tan layer shown in the photographs. It was found in an area along the river bank that had recently been washed out due to recent rains. So I'm not certain if it originated high above the bank or in the wet sand. Thank you, Buddy Edited August 28, 2015 by bothrops07
old bones
Welcome to the forum, bothrops07. I am not going to be much help for an ID, but someone will be along shortly who can help. Great photos!
DinoMike
Looks like a calcaneum rather than a humerus. Might be deer, rather resembles a deer calcaneum I found in Florida years ago.
garyc
Looks like a calcaneum from either a horse or cow/bison
DinoMike
I think garyc is a lot closer than I was... I didn't take note of the size of the object. That would have been one BIG deer!
bothrops07
That makes way more sense than the short armed, robust creature I was looking for. Thank you, guys
Harry Pristis
I think garyc is a lot closer than I was... I didn't take note of the size of the object. That would have been one BIG deer! Deer and cow calcanea do resemble one another. Length of this find indicates bovid, probably cow. http://pristis.wix.com/the-demijohn-page What seest thou else In the dark backward and abysm of time? ---Shakespeare, The Tempest
